The Madras High Court on Wednesday (November 20, 2024) ordered a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) probe into the Kallakurichi hooch tragedy that had claimed as many as 68 lives in June and July this year and directed the Crime Branch-Criminal Investigation Department (CB-CID) to hand over the case to the central agency.

The Madras High Court on Wednesday (20 November) ordered the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) to take over the probe into the Kallakurichi hooch tragedy, which claimed 68 lives in Tamil Nadu during June and July.

The judges transferred the case to CBI after contending that it was a serious matter as 68 lives had been lost due to consumption of illicit liquor.

In a major setback for the DMK government, Madras High Court on Wednesday entrusted to the CBI, the probe into the Kallakurichi hooch tragedy, which claimed 68 lives in July this year.
