Officials in Texas are set to vote Tuesday on a controversial new public school curriculum that incorporates Christian lessons from the Bible as early as kindergarten while putting less focus on other faiths.

In a preliminary vote on Tuesday, Texas education officials approved a proposal to allow lessons about the Bible into public school classrooms, according to multiple news reports. The state Board of Education voted 8-7 to adopt standards that would teach biblical lessons to students kindergarten through fifth grade,

School districts serving more than two million elementary-school children would be able to adopt a curriculum that draws on the Bible.
