Tanzania's communications regulator has suspended the digital platforms of a local media company over the publication of what it called restricted content, a move one opposition group said was aimed at muzzling media that is critical of the government.

Tanzania has suspended the digital division of the nation’s biggest media house, after it released an animated piece about abductions of people critical of the nation’s leaders.

The government of Tanzania has suspended the license of the Nation Media Group (NMG) subsidiary Mwananchi Communications Limited. Through the Tanzania Communications Regulatory Authority (TCRA), the media company has had its license suspended for the next 30 days.
