Hurricane Helene's​ massive rains and flooding is a major health and safety risk for residents exposed to potential waterborne illnesses and other dangers.

After hitting Florida’s Gulf Coast as a Category 4 hurricane late last week, Helene tore through the Southeast, leaving scores of people dead and millions without power as it unleashed historic rain and flooding.

A number of roads have been flooded and rail services disrupted as heavy rain hits north-west England. The Met Office has issued a yellow warning of heavy rain across the region. Merseyside Police said it had put temporary closures in place in the Seaforth Road and Knowsley Road area in Bootle.

People living near rivers should unfortunately stay on alert today, with dozens of flood warnings across England. In total, 33 red warnings where flooding is expected were in place and 74 yellow alerts where flooding is possible were in place last night,
